In a world constantly inundated with media messages and busy home and work schedules, it is easy to get overwhelmed. That’s why the practice of Yoga becomes so crucial. It allows us the ability to disconnect and reconnect. And I have to say, that is what I love about it most.
When I practice, it provides the space necessary to clear my thoughts and to disconnect from the outside world so that I can start to look within. My inner environment creates my outer environment, and the majority of the drama that exists in my life is a reflection of the thoughts I recycle in my mind. We oftentimes repeat the same conversations over and over again in order to maintain predictability in our lives, to know what is coming next. When I incorporate Yoga, I’m then able to break free from the recurring patterns and enter into new possibility.
From the moment my hands hit the floor to the last Savasana, final rest, I am completely connected to my breath, my body and my spirit. My soul feels fulfilled with each step because I’m connected to myself, and I’m not connected to anyone else or any external factor. Those 20 minutes, 40 minutes, or 60 minutes on my mat are the most precious moments of my day because everything gets placed into perspective. The phone call I was obsessing over, the reservations that went wrong and screwed up our plans, the message from my co-worker that I can’t stop thinking about … all of those worries and anxieties exist in a clouded mind space. And when I break free from that, the sky starts to clear and all I can hear is the sound of my breath.
Inhale … Exhale–I am breathing in, I am breathing out. With that simple practice, I become present and the world around me simplifies. This to me is the practice–the power of Yoga over anything else–the ability to disconnect and reconnect to my true and highest Self.
